Draft Horse vs. Light Horse — Which Is Right for You?
If you’re looking for a horse, you surely know that there are a lot of different types out there. There are quarter horses, thoroughbreds, Arabians, warmbloods, and the large ones, like Belgians, Percherons, and Clydesdales. So, how do you choose between a light horse and a draft or draft crossbred? Let’s take it apart.
Learning the Difference
People bred light horses, such quarter horses, thoroughbreds, Arabians, paint horses, and others, mostly for their speed and agility. They are usually thinner, more sensitive, and move faster. They are popular for jumping, cutting, barrel racing, and other performance sports.
People bred draft horses to be strong, long-lasting, and quiet. They are made to work alongside people and pull large loads for lengthy periods of time. Because of this, they are usually heavier, calmer, and more forgiving.
Draft crossbreds are the best of both worlds. They frequently have the calm temperament and strength of a draft breed, as well as the lighter build and mobility of a sport or light horse.
When a Light Horse Could Be the Right Fit for You
If you:
- Want to compete in sports that require speed or agility, including barrel racing, cutting, or polo
- Are an experienced rider who is okay with a horse that reacts quickly
- Want a horse that is naturally fast and athletic
- Want a horse with a longer, quicker stride
When a Draft or Draft Crossbred Is the Right Choice
If you:
- Are a beginning or returning rider who wants a horse that is quiet and easy to handle
- Have kids who will be riding
- Want a horse for trail riding or just for fun
- Want a horse that can pull a carriage or do some labor on the property
- Want a horse with a calm, steady disposition that you can trust
The Factor of Temperament
This is where drafts really stand out. Draft breeds are safer and more fun for everyday riders who don’t want to compete since they are peaceful and love humans. They just want a partner they can trust. Many experienced riders who have “graduated” from fiery, reactive horses find draft crossbreds to be a breath of fresh air. Finally, a horse that listens, stays calm, and makes riding pleasurable again.
Size: A Good Thing, Not a Bad Thing
A lot of people are scared of how big a draft horse is. A Belgian can weigh more than 2,000 pounds and be 17 hands tall, so it’s easy to see why. But being that big has its perks: drafts frequently have wide, comfy backs that are easy to sit on. And a lot of draft crossbreds are between 15 and 16 hands tall, which makes them easy to handle.
